My terminal setup

Posted in Web Development on the 11th of November 2015 by @aaronrutley

I’ve been refining my command line / terminal setup over the last couple of years, I’m always keen to see and hear what others are using so i’ve shared my setup below.

 Oh My Zsh

Oh My Zsh is an open source, community-driven framework for managing your zsh configuration.” I’m a huge fan of Oh My Zsh, It comes with over 200 optional plugins to improve a whole range of things on the command line.

I’m currently using the following plugins:

  • bower
  • git-extras
  • vagrant
  • osx
  • last-working-dir

I’m sure there are a lot more that I could benefit from, If you have any tips let me know on twitter and I’ll update this list!

I’m using iTerm2 as a Mac OS Terminal replacement, it comes with a bunch of handy features like autocomplete, split plane and hotkey window. Iterm2 also works well with Oh My Zsh as you can easily customise the look and feel of the shell. I’m using a slightly modified version of the agnoster theme.

Bonus tip:  I like to have the time on the right hand side of my terminal, it helps me keep track of how long I’ve been working on a project / when a task was run. Use the code above in a custom Oh My Zsh theme if you’d like to do the same!
